About this Research Topic Glycobiology is one of the fastest growing field in the natural sciences and is widely relevant to many areas of basic research, biomedicine and biotechnology. Glycobiology began with the discovery of sphingolipids, sphingomyelin and sphingosine by Dr. J. L. W. Thudichum in the late 19th century. Glycans have recently taken center stage in many areas of biomedical and life sciences, ranging from research on cancer, mammalian development and physiology to studies of plants, bacteria and viruses. Glycoconjugates, the most complex and rapidly evolving building blocks of life, play a plethora of biological roles in all life forms.

Additional products for glycoprotein research include the Sialic Acid Florescence Labeling Kit for efficient modification of sialic acid-containing moieties with DMB prior to detection by HPLC, and kits for purification of glycan samples (including hydrazine-treated samples) prior to fluorescent labeling with 2-aminopyridine (pyridylamination reaction). Glycobiology is an integrative science, crossing the fields of chemistry, biology, medicine, and materials science. Defined in the broadest sense, glycobiology is the study of the structure, biosynthesis and biology of glycans (carbohydrates). N-Glycans are covalently attached to protein at asparagine (Asn) residues by an N-glycosidic bond. Although diverse sugars are attached to Asn in prokaryotes (Chapters 21 and 22), all eukaryotic N-glycans begin with GlcNAcβ1–Asn and are the focus of this chapter.

Glycobiology research

Defined in the narrowest sense, glycobiology is the study of the structure, biosynthesis, and biology of saccharides (sugar chains or glycans) that are widely distributed in nature. This section of Glycobiology provides a venue featuring manuscripts describing important new research and developments in computational methodology that are required for modern glycobiology, along with robust analytic data sets that utilize or inspire these tools.

Recently, legitimate discoveries in glycobiology have been used as marketing tools to help sell plant extracts termed “glyconutrients.” Immunoglobulin G glycome and severity of COVID-19: more likely a quantification of bias than a true association. A comment on Petrović et al., “Composition of the immunoglobulin G glycome associates with the severity of COVID-19” Chemical tools have proven indispensable for studies in glycobiology. Synthetic oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates provide materials for correlating structure with function. Synthetic mimics of the complex assemblies found on cell surfaces can modulate cellular interactions and are under development as therapeutic agents.
